Virtual Assistants – Air Conditioning Design

Living design is more than just cooling and heating

The concept of a healthy home environment includes specific standards for cooling and heating, moisture and humidity control, ventilation, and reducing outdoor air infiltration. What is obvious is that some of the components are in direct opposition to another.

We are all very aware that limiting heat or cold into our homes during the relevant seasons leads to better efficiency of cooling and heating systems and therefore reduced running costs. Until recently with the emergence of Covid 19 we were less aware of the need to ventilate our homes to provide a healthy air quality.

THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT BOTH IS ACHIEVABLE.

We design systems to cater for both needs and our designs are based on a unique design style that enables us to have a complete picture of our customer’s needs and also what is important to each individual which may include aesthetics, budget, comfort, or a combination.

It is our principle aim for our designs to eliminate waste both in terms of unnecessary capital costs and future running costs which saves money whilst being environmentally responsible. However, we ensure that our designs will provide the comfort conditions required by each customer.

A friend who had heard me complaining many times on the effect of over-sizing air conditioners asked me to do a comprehensive survey of his apartment before he made a purchase. He lives in Brisbane where the summer climate is notorious for its humidity, so this was important to consider in our design. His air conditioning has now been in place over 5 years and every year since we have systematically checked for mould and at the time of writing it has not been necessary to clean any mould from the coils of his indoor units. This has saved him significantly as this job ideally should be performed by a qualified technician and, in some cases, can be necessary twice a year. Whilst I would like to take full credit for this successful outcome, my friend is pedantic in reading user manuals and has operated and maintained his air conditioners in accordance with the manufacturer’s guidelines which has certainly contributed to this result.

Every brand of air conditioner has characteristics that relate differently to each design.

A theoretical design suggests that to achieve the comfort required an air conditioner rated at 7.1kW would be the right choice however if we compare two air conditioners:

Brand A has a Capacity range 1.1 – 8.3kW and only lists Airflow as 325l/s on high fan whereas:

Brand B has a Capacity range 2.08 – 8.7kW with an Airflow range of 60l/s to 310l/s

Which air conditioner would be the best choice? That depends on the results of our comprehensive heat load estimate and how much airflow is required to achieve some humidity control. This is where we excel, with years of experience we can interpret the specifications to help you choose. Not only will we identify several units matching your requirements, once you have made your purchase, we will finalize the design by summarizing the user manual for easy use.

It is important to note that we do not sell air conditioners or have any commercial connections with any brand. Our advice will always be based on achieving maximum comfort conditions, healthy air quality and energy efficiency.

EDUCATION

There are many and varying ideas on how best to use an air conditioner, some based on fact and many others on superstitions. The truth being that the way an air conditioner achieves heating or cooling has not changed from the original concept based on the basic laws of physics and the refrigeration cycle to maintain comfortable living conditions.

We believe that having a basic knowledge using every day terminology will assist consumers to make choices that will benefit them both financially and providing a healthy living environment for their family.
